Don't call me Queer

Description

edit: if you're planning to comment saying 'queer', sorry to break it to you but there was already a bunch of people before you who thought they had just made the most hilarious joke. It's been done, you can move along.

You might be living in a country where ‘queer’ has become an acceptable term to use when referring to people who are not heterosexual and/or cisgender but please understand that in most other countries it’s considered a highly offensive term. There will also be people in your own country who feel alienated by the term.

A few synonyms for queer are: Eccentric, Atypical, Bizarre, Strange, Odd, Peculiar, Puzzling, Weird, Doubtful, Doubious, Mysterious, Eerie, Questionable, Unusual, and Unnatural.

I refuse to be a synonym with any of these words.

Even if some homosexual people are okay with the word fag, that does not make the word fag an okay term to use. Making it an okay term would completely ignore all the homosexual people who have been bullied/harassed with the word and relate it to traumatic/painful events.

The exact same thing applies to the word queer.

Please be considerate and refrain from using the word. If you have trouble doing this replace it with one of the above synonyms and consider posting/saying it like that, because that’s what you are initially saying.

FAQ

Do you think it is ok for non-cishet people to reclaim the word queer?

I think as long as they use it for themselves, it’s okay. I completely understand what they mean to say when they use it for themselves, and I’m fine with that. But they should use it for them, and them alone. Just like a gay man is allowed to call himself a fag. You can not degrade yourself, because you say it about yourself. I can say I’m stupid without being offensive towards myself.

I know a lot of people personally don’t relate the word queer to being offensive, but the point is that a lot of other people do. That’s why you shouldn’t just call other people queer, or talk about ‘queer issues’ and ‘queerphobia’.

Please favourite it if you plan to use it. Thank you in advance!

THANK YOU!

Not only am I sick and tired of constantly being lumped in with people (including heterosexuals) with fictitious 'gender identities', and being treated as a monolith of some sort- but being called a slur that essenially means 'weird/unusual' is a big "HELL NO!" for me.

As a same-sex attracted person (i.e. a homosexual), JUST SAY 'GAY'!

Being called/referred to as 'queer' or 'LGB+TUVWXYZ' is literally the worst, and I wish that all of these brainwashed crazy people would stop trying to normalize it.
